SPEAKER: Dan Olsen, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at CSU
TOPIC: Methane Emissions from Natural gas Engines and how to Mitigate Them
DESCRIPTION: Natural gas (NG) engines are a critical component of the energy sector, offering a cleaner alternative to traditional fuels. However, methane emissions remain a challenge. Methane slip from internal combustion engines is relatively high owing to its low reactivity relative to other hydrocarbon fuels. Methane leakage from compressor packing vents, blow-downs, and other sources are also problematic. The focus of this talk is on engine compressor sets and integral compressors, with an emphasis on lean burn engines. The sources of methane emissions are reviewed, followed by a discussion of mitigation approaches.
